The private taxi from Virpazar to Theth covers approximately ~230 km and takes around 3.5 hours — from the shores of Skadar Lake to the glacial valley of the Albanian Alps, crossing into Albania at Bozaj and ascending via Koplik and the Maja e Shales mountain pass to Theth. Virpazar is a small town on the shore of Skadar Lake — the largest lake in the Balkans, a UNESCO-candidate national park, and the heart of Crmnica wine country. The town sits at the mouth of the Rijeka Crnojevića where it flows into the lake, surrounded by the terraced Vranac vineyards of Crmnica and the ruins of a medieval fortress above. From Virpazar, pelican boat tours depart onto the lake, the wine estates of Godinje village are a short drive up the hillside, and the restaurants of Plantaže 13. Jul on Vranjina, De Andos, and Dimidžana serve the freshest lake fish and the best Vranac in Montenegro. TTM uses high-clearance SUV vehicles required for the unpaved upper mountain road. From Virpazar the route heads south to the Podgorica highway before turning south to the Bozaj border crossing into Albania. After the border the road passes through the Albanian lowlands to Koplik, where it turns east into the mountains, climbing through increasingly dramatic valleys toward Maja e Shales and descending to the Theth glacial valley. The Peaks of the Balkans trail, the Valbona Pass crossing, the kulla towers, and the Blue Eye spring are all accessible from Theth. Cash on arrival, 24/7.
