In 1242, as the Mongol army of Batu Khan swept westward through the Balkans following its devastating campaign through Hungary and Poland, it reached the walls of Ulcinj. The Montenegrin forces defending the town held — and in doing so dealt the Mongols one of their most significant defeats of the entire western campaign. The significance of this moment cannot be overstated: the Mongol strategy called for this force to link up with a second Mongol column advancing through the Adriatic corridor toward Istria, where the combined armies would have struck into the heart of central Europe — into the lands that are today Italy, Austria, and Germany. That meeting never happened. The defeat at Ulcinj disrupted the plan and the Mongols withdrew, redirecting their fury toward easier targets. Europe was saved from a catastrophe whose scale and consequences it has never fully appreciated.
The Mongols exacted their revenge not on Ulcinj — which had proven too costly — but on the surrounding region. The medieval city of Svač (also known as Shas or Shass), a short distance from Ulcinj, was razed to the ground. Svač had been one of the most important early Christian religious centres in the entire eastern Adriatic — a city of remarkable ecclesiastical richness, famous for its 365 churches, one for every day of the year, built during the early Christian and medieval period. The Mongols burned and destroyed the city completely, obliterating centuries of religious and cultural heritage in an act of deliberate annihilation. The ruins of Svač survive today as a haunting archaeological site in the fields near Ulcinj — what remains is enough to suggest the scale of what was lost. The grassy mounds, scattered carved stone, and the fragments of church walls that still stand in the open landscape are all that survive of a place that was once a centre of faith, learning, and civilisation.
