Theth is one of the most extraordinary mountain villages in the western Balkans — a remote highland settlement in the heart of the Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Namuna / Prokletije), accessible from Montenegro via the Vermosh valley and the mountain road that crosses the Albanian border near Hani i Hotit. The village sits in a deep glacial valley at around 800 metres, surrounded by limestone peaks rising to over 2,500 metres, with the Shala River flowing through the valley floor and the iconic stone kulla towers of the old highland clans still standing in the village as they have for centuries. It is, for hikers, trekkers, and anyone who wants to experience an Alpine landscape of genuine wilderness character, one of the finest destinations accessible from Montenegro.

The taxi Podgorica Airport to Theth — the private transfer from TGD to Theth — covers approximately 100 km and takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes. The route from Podgorica Airport follows the highway south through the Bozaj border crossing into Albania, continuing to Koplik in the Shkodër lowlands. From Koplik the road turns left — east — into the mountains, leaving the flat plain behind and beginning a gradual ascent through a succession of increasingly dramatic valleys and highland landscapes. The scenery changes rapidly as the road climbs: the agricultural lowlands give way to narrowing river valleys, limestone ridges, and the particular quality of Albanian highland terrain where every bend reveals a deeper and more remote landscape than the one before. The road continues climbing toward Maja e Shales — the high mountain pass that marks the approach to the Theth basin — before descending through the final valley section into Theth itself. This descent into the village, with the limestone walls of the Albanian Alps rising on all sides and the Shala River visible below, is one of the finest arrival experiences of any mountain destination in the western Balkans. The road from the Albanian lowlands into Theth is a mountain track of varying quality — rough in sections, spectacular throughout, and entirely impassable for standard low-clearance vehicles. TTM vehicles are SUV and high-clearance and are suited to the Theth approach road in all normal weather conditions. Theth has developed rapidly as a hiking and trekking destination in the past decade. The Peaks of the Balkans trail — the 192 km circular route connecting Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro — passes through Theth and has brought significant international hiking traffic to the village. The most celebrated day hike from Theth is the crossing to Valbona via the Valbona Pass (1,793 m) — one of the finest single-day mountain walks in the Balkans. The village also offers the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), the Grunas waterfall, and the historic lock-in tower (kulla) as accessible attractions within walking distance.
