The route heads south along the main coastal highway, passing through Bar before reaching Ulcinj — Montenegro's southernmost and most characterful town. Few places on the Adriatic carry the weight of history that Ulcinj does — and one chapter in particular deserves to be far better known than it is. In 1242, as the Mongol army of Batu Khan swept westward through the Balkans following its devastating campaign through Hungary and Poland, it reached the walls of Ulcinj. The Montenegrin forces defending the town held — and in doing so dealt the Mongols one of their most significant defeats of the entire western campaign. The significance of this moment cannot be overstated: the Mongol strategy called for this force to link up with a second Mongol column advancing through the Adriatic corridor toward Istria, where the combined armies would have struck into the heart of central Europe — into the lands that are today Italy, Austria, and Germany. That meeting never happened. The defeat at Ulcinj disrupted the plan and the Mongols withdrew, redirecting their fury toward easier targets. The Mongols exacted their revenge not on Ulcinj — which had proven too costly — but on the surrounding region. The medieval city of Svač (also known as Shas or Shass), a short distance from Ulcinj, was razed to the ground. Ulcinj is unlike any other town on the Montenegrin coast. Where the northern Riviera towns are Mediterranean in character — Venetian, Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav modern — Ulcinj is something older and more layered. The town was an important centre of the ancient Illyrian world, later a Roman colony, then Byzantine, then Serbian medieval, then Ottoman for over three centuries. The Stari Grad — the old fortified citadel rising on the rocky promontory above the sea — carries all of these histories simultaneously in its walls, its mosques, its towers, and its narrow lanes. It is one of the most genuinely historic urban spaces in the entire Adriatic, and standing on its ramparts at sunset — with the Adriatic stretching south toward Albania and the long beach of Ulcinj laid out below — is one of the defining experiences of any visit to Montenegro.

TGD'den doğrudan toplu taşıma yok: There is no direct public bus from Podgorica Airport to Ulcinj. The closest thing is a bus from Podgorica city centre to Ulcinj, but it does not serve the airport and requires a separate taxi to the city first. Yaz trafiği: The southern coastal road through Bar and toward Ulcinj can slow considerably in July and August, particularly in the afternoon and early evening. The approach to Ulcinj through the coastal settlement zone is the most affected section. TTM drivers know the best route at any given time of day and will advise accordingly. Early morning arrivals from Podgorica Airport reach Ulcinj in close to the standard 90 minutes year-round.
