Few places on the Adriatic carry the weight of history that Ulcinj does — and one chapter in particular deserves to be far better known than it is. In 1242, as the Mongol army of Batu Khan swept westward through the Balkans following its devastating campaign through Hungary and Poland, it reached the walls of Ulcinj. The Montenegrin forces defending the town held — and in doing so dealt the Mongols one of their most significant defeats of the entire western campaign. The significance of this moment cannot be overstated: the Mongol strategy called for this force to link up with a second Mongol column advancing through the Adriatic corridor toward Istria, where the combined armies would have struck into the heart of central Europe — into the lands that are today Italy, Austria, and Germany. That meeting never happened. The defeat at Ulcinj disrupted the plan and the Mongols withdrew, redirecting their fury toward easier targets. The Mongols exacted their revenge not on Ulcinj — which had proven too costly — but on the surrounding region. The medieval city of Svač (also known as Shas or Shass), a short distance from Ulcinj, was razed to the ground. It is one of the most genuinely historic urban spaces in the entire Adriatic, and standing on its ramparts at sunset — with the Adriatic stretching south toward Albania and the long beach of Ulcinj laid out below — is one of the defining experiences of any visit to Montenegro.

Velika Plaza (Great Beach) is its opposite in every way — a 12-kilometre arc of open sandy beach stretching toward Ada Bojana and the Albanian border, wide and mostly undeveloped, where the wind comes in off the Adriatic and the space is vast. It is one of the longest beaches in the region and still one of the least crowded per metre of sand.
Velika Plaža is one of the best kitesurfing destinations in the Mediterranean. The jugo and bura winds that funnel along the coast create consistent, reliable conditions that have put Ulcinj on the kitesurfing map for riders from across Europe. The Dulcigno Solana — the historic salt production complex south of the town — is one of the most important wetland sites for birds in the entire Adriatic basin. The combination of salt pans, shallow lagoons, and reed beds creates a habitat that is irreplaceable — and the sight of a flock of flamingos against the backdrop of the Albanian mountains is one of those images that defines a visit to this part of Montenegro.
Valdanos is a sheltered bay north of Ulcinj whose slopes are covered by one of the oldest and largest olive groves in Montenegro — thousands of ancient trees, some of them centuries old, growing in terraced rows above a calm, clear bay. The combination of the old olive trees, the blue water below, and the silence of the grove makes Valdanos one of the most distinctive natural sites on the entire coast. A walk through the Valdanos olive grove in the late afternoon, when the light catches the silver-grey leaves, is an experience that belongs entirely to this part of the Mediterranean world.
The fertile plain of Ulcinj Polje and the area around Donji Stoj produce some of the finest fruit and vegetables in Montenegro. The mandarins of Ulcinj are legendary in the region — small, intensely flavoured, and ripening in late autumn when the rest of the coast has closed for the season. The watermelons of Ulcinj Polje are among the best on the Adriatic — large, sweet, and sold from roadside stalls throughout the summer. The local markets in season are a serious pleasure for anyone who cares about what they eat.
Ulcinj's food scene reflects the town's position at the crossroads of Adriatic, Ottoman, and Albanian culinary traditions. Fresh fish is central — the town is an active fishing port and the catch is sold directly from the boats to the restaurants above. The crni rižoto (black risotto), lignje na žaru (grilled squid), and fresh sea bass and bream prepared in the southern Montenegrin style are among the best on the coast. Albanian-influenced dishes — lamb, cornbread, and dairy — appear alongside the seafood, and the coffee culture of the old town is its own chapter.
