About Perast

Perast — Where the Bay Holds Its Breath

Perast is one of the most extraordinary small towns in the Adriatic — a single street of Baroque palaces built along the waterfront of the inner Bay of Kotor, backed by a steep limestone cliff and looking out over two small islands that have sat in the calm water before it for centuries. The town is tiny: barely 350 metres long along the waterfront, with no more than a few hundred permanent residents. But the density of architectural heritage it contains is extraordinary — more than sixteen Baroque palaces, built by the merchant-captain families of the maritime republic of Perast during the 17th and 18th centuries, when this small town commanded some of the finest sailors and naval officers in the Adriatic. The taxi Podgorica to Perast — the private airport transfer from TGD to Perast — covers approximately 90 km via the coastal road and takes around 90 to 100 minutes, passing through the Bay of Kotor and arriving in a town that looks, at first sight, exactly like the paintings of it that hang in the palaces above the waterfront. TTM has been driving this route since 2003.

Perast was for centuries the most important maritime town of the inner bay — its captains sailed for Venice, Russia, and the great trading powers of the Mediterranean; its naval school trained the officers of Peter the Great's Russian fleet; and the wealth accumulated in service of those powers came back to the town in the form of the palaces that line the waterfront today. The Bujović Palace — the most celebrated of the Perast palaces and now home to the Town Museum — is the finest example of this accumulated maritime prosperity: a Baroque palazzo on the waterfront whose interiors contain paintings, charts, navigational instruments, and the personal effects of the captains who commanded vessels across the known world from a village on an inland bay in the western Balkans. The relationship between the grandeur of the architecture and the modesty of the setting is one of the most striking things about Perast — and one of the most Montenegrin.

Perast is also the point from which boat taxis depart for the two islands visible from the waterfront — Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks) and Sveti Đorđe (St. George). The first is a man-made island built up over centuries by the sailors of Perast, who had a tradition of throwing stones into the water on the feast of the Assumption to extend and maintain the island; its church contains ex-votos, paintings, and the accumulated offerings of sailors who credited the Madonna with their survival at sea. The second is a natural island occupied by a Benedictine monastery and a cypress grove — closed to visitors but visible at every angle from the waterfront. Together they form one of the most iconic images in Montenegro and one of the most frequently photographed views on the entire Adriatic coast.

⛨ Gospa od Škrpjela — Our Lady of the Rocks

A man-made island built up by the sailors of Perast over centuries — the tradition of throwing stones on the feast of the Assumption extended it gradually to its current form. The church contains a remarkable collection of ex-votos: votive paintings commissioned by sailors who survived storms, battles, and shipwrecks and attributed their survival to the Madonna of the island. Boat taxi from the Perast waterfront.

⛨ Sveti Đorđe — St. George Island

The natural island immediately beside Our Lady of the Rocks — occupied by a Benedictine monastery and a dense grove of cypress trees. Closed to visitors but visible from every point along the Perast waterfront, its silhouette — the dark cypresses against the bay and the mountains — is among the most iconic images of the Bay of Kotor.

🏛️ Bujović Palace — Town Museum

The finest of the Perast Baroque palaces and now home to the Town Museum of Perast — paintings, navigational charts, maritime instruments, and the personal effects of the captain families who sailed for Venice, Russia, and the great powers of the Mediterranean from this waterfront. One of the finest small maritime museums in the Adriatic.

🏛️ Sixteen Baroque Palaces

More Baroque palaces per capita than almost anywhere in the Balkans — the accumulated wealth of two centuries of maritime service, brought back to the inner bay by captains who wanted their success visible on the waterfront of the town they never entirely left. Walking the single waterfront street of Perast is walking through one of the most compact concentrations of Venetian-era architecture in the eastern Adriatic.

🏛️ Sveti Nikola Tower

The unfinished campanile of the Church of Sveti Nikola — the tallest structure in Perast, begun in the 18th century and never completed — is one of the most striking landmarks on the bay waterfront. Its incompleteness is part of its character: the construction stopped when the fortunes of the maritime republic began to decline, and it has stood half-finished above the waterfront ever since.

🏉 Peter the Great's Naval School

The naval school of Perast — established in the 17th century — trained the officers of Peter the Great's Russian fleet. The Tsar sent his young noblemen to Perast to learn seamanship from the finest captains in the Adriatic; the Russian connection left its mark on the town in the form of portraits, documents, and the particular pride with which Perast has always carried its role in a history larger than its size would suggest.

Where to Stay & Eat

Restaurants & Accommodation in Perast

Perast has a small but well-regarded selection of restaurants along the waterfront and a growing number of boutique accommodation options in the converted palace buildings above it. The dining is predominantly seafood-focused, with the particular quality of a restaurant scene that knows its setting does half the work and concentrates on doing the other half well. TTM provides private taxi to Perast from Podgorica Airport at a fixed price, dropping guests at the waterfront or at any specific address in the town.

🍽 Restaurants

🍽 Smjan — Waterfront

Smjan is one of the most consistently praised restaurants in Perast — a waterfront dining experience that makes the most of the island view and the quality of the local seafood. Fresh fish, grilled octopus, and Boka coastal cooking in a setting where the two island churches are visible throughout the meal. One of the defining restaurant experiences on the Bay of Kotor.

🍽 Conte & Antika

Two further well-regarded options along the Perast waterfront — Conte for its reliable quality and its position directly above the water, Antika for a slightly more intimate setting in a converted historic building with the accumulated character of a restaurant that has been in the same location for many years. Both draw a loyal following of guests who return to Perast specifically for the combination of food and setting.

🍽 Stari Mlini — Ljuta

Stari Mlini in nearby Ljuta — a short private taxi ride from Perast — is one of the most celebrated restaurants in the entire Bay of Kotor area: a converted watermill on the Ljuta spring, with a garden terrace above the water and a menu of exceptional freshwater and coastal cooking that has earned it a reputation well beyond the region. TTM covers the Perast–Ljuta transfer at a fixed price.

🏠 Accommodation

🏛️ Palace Apartments — Waterfront

Several of the historic Perast palaces have been converted into boutique apartment accommodation — offering guests the experience of staying within the Baroque architecture of the waterfront, with views directly over the bay and the two islands. The combination of the setting, the architecture, and the quiet of the town after the day visitors leave makes these among the most distinctive accommodation options on the Montenegrin coast.

🏠 Villa Nikolin & Boutique Hotels

A small number of boutique hotels and villas in and around Perast offer well-regarded accommodation with the particular quality of a small town that does not over-develop. Villa Nikolin and several similar properties combine comfortable modern facilities with the historic setting and the water access that makes Perast worth staying in rather than merely passing through.

🏠 Kotor — 12 km Base

Many visitors to Perast are based in Kotor (12 km south) and make Perast a half-day excursion. TTM covers the Kotor–Perast transfer at a fixed price — drop off for a morning visit, collect at the agreed time, or continue to other bay destinations as part of a longer day-tour of the inner bay. The Bay of Kotor

Perast in the Context of the Inner Bay

Perast is located in the inner Bay of Kotor — the narrowest and most sheltered part of the bay, where the water is enclosed on all sides by the limestone mountains of Montenegro and where the light, the reflections, and the silence combine into a landscape of unusual intimacy. The town sits 12 km northwest of Kotor on the north shore of the inner bay, at the point where the water is at its narrowest and the view across to the south shore is at its most compressed.

The drive from Podgorica Airport to Perast along the bay coastal road is one of the most scenic airport transfers in Montenegro — passing through Tivat, Kotor, and along the inner bay road with the water visible throughout. TTM drivers have been covering this route since 2003 and know every viewpoint, every passing place, and every reason to slow down on the approach to Perast. For guests wanting to combine Perast with Kotor or with other bay destinations in a single day, TTM can arrange the full itinerary at fixed prices — contact us via WhatsApp with your programme.

🏛️ Kotor — 12 km

The UNESCO Old Town of Kotor is 12 km south of Perast along the bay coastal road — the most visited destination in the inner bay and a natural pairing with Perast for guests who want to cover the best of the Bay of Kotor in a single day. TTM covers the Perast–Kotor transfer at a fixed price.

⛷ Tivat — Porto Montenegro

Tivat and Porto Montenegro are accessible from Perast via the bay coastal road — 30 minutes by private taxi. The contrast between the medieval maritime atmosphere of Perast and the contemporary luxury marina of Porto Montenegro is one of the more striking experiences available within a short drive on the bay.

🍖 Risan — Roman Mosaics

The town of Risan at the head of the inner bay — just 5 km northwest of Perast — contains some of the finest preserved Roman floor mosaics in the Adriatic, from a villa of the 2nd or 3rd century AD. A short private taxi ride from Perast and a complement to any heritage visit to the inner bay.

🍷 Stari Mlini — Ljuta Spring

The celebrated Stari Mlini restaurant on the Ljuta spring — a few kilometres from Perast toward Kotor — is accessible by private taxi in under 15 minutes. For guests dining at Stari Mlini from Perast, TTM covers the short transfer at a fixed price and can arrange collection at the agreed time.
